The Easter Sunday miracle for the Carreras family began with a visit to a friend’s wedding in Montana where they received a life-changing news about their unexpected pregnancy.

  • At the six-week appointment, the couple found out they were having twins.
  • They thought it was normal as both have twins in the family.

Their hope was to eventually have two or three children, but they were surprised when they found out they would welcome ā€˜spontaneous triplets’ to their family. Doctors discovered that the babies had a rare condition known as ā€˜selective birth restriction’ which made the second baby, Bennett, have a harder time getting nutrients and growing at a slower rate. ā€œReally, what that meant was that he had a harder time getting nutrients and so he was just taking longer to grow, so at the earlier appointment, he hadn’t been big enough to be detected,ā€ said mom Whitney Carreras. Once their heads stopped spinning, the couple realized that they would need a bigger car to accommodate their growing family. ā€œYeah, we couldn’t fit three car seats in our current car,ā€ said dad Tom. ā€œIt was just logical things that you don’t think about.ā€
The family spent the next several weeks traveling to Houston and later to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Dallas, where they received increased medical care and monitoring.

“It’s amazing,” said Neonatologist Dr. Tala Brack. “Obviously, we get very attached to all our babies but there’s something special when there’s a multiple birth.”

The rare triplets were born on March 31, at 30 weeks and three days, just short of the 32-week goal. Dr. Brack explained that natural triplet births, which did not involve fertility treatments like IVF, are extremely rare, occurring at a rate of about 1 in 10,000 pregnancies.

  1. Bennett was just so much smaller than his brothers that initially they didn’t see him, he said.
  2. The doctor explained that the babies were initially thought to be two little boys, and then another boy, so a total of three.

The tiny trio is developmentally doing well, and each is beginning to show off their individual personalities. ā€œHe’s very expressive with his face,ā€ said mom Whitney, describing Baby Caleb’s personality. ā€œAnd then there’s independent, free-spirited Baby Oliver. He kind of goes to his own beat,ā€ she said. ā€œAnytime we’d see him in the ultrasound, he’d have his feet crossed, laying back,ā€ said mom, describing Baby Oliver’s unique pose. And then, there’s resilient Baby Bennett, who has been a fighter from the start. ā€œIn our perception, out of the three, he’s the less fussy, he just kind of takes it,ā€ said dad Tom.

The family of immense faith says they hope their story gives hope to other expectant parents and are grateful for the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. ā€œJust wonderful care. We are so, so grateful and now our boys are here and we’re really grateful,ā€ said Whitney Carreras. ā€œI saw her sitting there writing on a notecard, a stack of notecards,ā€ recalled Dr. Brack. ā€œI was like, ‘Tell me you are not writing ‘thank you’ notes for a baby shower.’ “
The doctor was impressed by Whitney’s dedication to her students as a 4th-grade teacher in Wylie ISD, and her ability to write notes of encouragement to her students ahead of their STAAR test. No surprise, Dr. Brack said with a big smile, that Whitney’s selflessness and dedication to her students would be worthy of recognition.
