Should I buy a snowsuit by age or by height?
By height. Age labels are an average, and babies of the same age can differ by a whole size. This calculator maps a measured height to a typical size band and uses age only to flag a mismatch. Every brand prints its own chart, and that chart decides.
Should I size up a snowsuit?
When your child is near the top of a band, the next size may fit for longer, which is a money question, not a warmth one. Cuffs should not cover the hands and feet loosely. Whatever the size, a snowsuit comes off before the car seat: the AAP says "bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, should not be worn underneath the harness of a car seat."
How do I measure my baby's height for sizing?
Lay a young baby on their back on a flat surface, gently straighten the legs, mark the top of the head and the bottom of the heel, and measure between the marks. Measure a standing toddler against a wall without shoes. Re-measure before each purchase: the first year is fast.
Anything to check on a second-hand or hand-me-down coat?
Hood and neck drawstrings. Federal rules (16 CFR 1120.3) treat children's upper outerwear in sizes 2T to 16 with drawstrings that do not meet the ASTM F1816-97 standard as a substantial product hazard. Check CPSC's recall list for any second-hand item, and never put a stroller bunting or footmuff in a car seat.
