The event was spearheaded by Shanette Nickens, the early education program director, who wanted to provide the mothers with the essentials they need to care for their newborns. “I loved it, it was pretty nice,” said Esmeralda Love, one of the new mothers in attendance. “Definitely some stuff that we weren’t able to get at our baby shower that we were able to get here.”
The event was a huge success, with over 40 families expressing interest in attending the next event. This is a testament to the growing need for community support in Kansas City. As the cost of raising a child continues to rise, families are struggling to make ends meet.

This cost includes everything from food and clothing to childcare and education. “We really get full quickly now,” said Shanette Nickens. “It’s one of those things where we’ll post it, and within 48 hours, we have 40 families already signed up. Lydia Robinson, a certified professional midwife and doula, was on hand to provide information and guidance on prenatal and postpartum care. “It is the start of Black maternal health week,” said Robinson. “So, we just discuss how important it is as a Black person giving birth in the United States to just make sure that you’re educated and aware that you should be asking more questions.”
